Opened in 1956, the tower became the city’s landmark and marked the beginning of a new era in tower construction, both structurally and architecturally, as it was the first of its kind to be made of reinforced concrete.

In addition to its architectural innovation, the successful commercial operation of a restaurant and an observation deck paved the way for a global wave of tower construction. Due to its outstanding architectural significance, it received an architecture award as early as 1959 and, in 2009, was awarded the title “Historical Landmark of Civil Engineering in Germany” by the Federal Chamber of Engineers. It was also added to the list of cultural monuments in 1986.
