Rio rosewood (also known as Brazilian rosewood) is a type of wood from trees of the Dalbergia genus (Dalbergia) from the papilionaceous subfamily.
Rosewood has been a highly valued precious wood for centuries.
Since 1968, there has been an export ban on logs of this species in Brazil.
In 1992, Rio rosewood was placed under species protection and in 1993 under the same stricter protection as ivory.
Until then, it was highly sought after for high-quality designer furniture and office equipment at management level as well as for musical instruments due to its unique sound properties.
