The new ones just aren’t the same. We often hear this from our customers when they talk about the new Eames Lounge Chairs—and yes, they’re right. Since 1993, the tropical Rio rosewood that was once used has been protected like ivory and is no longer available for furniture making. The leather with its elegant silky sheen has given way to matte leather. In short, the old lounge chairs are more beautiful and more comfortable—provided they’ve been well restored, that is. And the old ones have something the new ones can’t have: history. Our chair comes from a villa in Potsdam.

Note on etiquette:
The “double-label” era of the late 1960s and 1970s: To document this close collaboration, European furniture pieces were labeled with tags bearing both the name of the American rights holder and that of the European manufacturer. This explains the inscription “Herman Miller – made by VITRA” or the reference to the “Herman Miller International Collection – manufactured by VITRA.”
